Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how Google sees your website: which searches you appear for, which pages are indexed, and what problems to fix. Here is how to set it up and use it.
Step 1: Add your website
Go to search.google.com/search-console, sign in with a Google account the business controls, and add a property. The Domain property type covers all versions of your site (http, https, www and non-www).
Step 2: Verify ownership
For a Domain property, Google gives you a TXT record to add to your DNS. You can add it in cPanel's Zone Editor or ask your host. See What Is DNS?
Step 3: Submit your sitemap
Under Sitemaps, submit your sitemap URL – usually yourdomain/sitemap.xml or sitemap_index.xml on WordPress with an SEO plugin.
Step 4: Check the reports that matter
- Performance – searches you appear for, clicks, impressions and average position.
- Pages (Indexing) – which pages are indexed and why some are not.
- Core Web Vitals – speed and user experience on mobile and desktop.
- Enhancements – structured data such as FAQs, products and breadcrumbs.
- Security & Manual Actions – warnings about hacking or penalties.
Step 5: Request indexing for new pages
Use URL Inspection and click Request indexing after publishing an important new page.
Turn data into action
In the Performance report, find searches where you appear in positions 5–20. Improving those pages (better titles, more helpful content) often brings quick gains. Then follow our SEO checklist.
