Your domain name is your address on the internet and part of your brand. Change it later and you lose search rankings, printed materials and customer habits – so it is worth choosing well. Here is how to choose the perfect domain name for your business in Tanzania.

1. Keep it short and easy to say

Customers will hear your domain on the phone, on the radio and from friends. Short names with common words are easier to remember and type. Avoid unusual spellings that people will get wrong.

2. Use your business name

The best domain is usually your business name: yourbusiness.co.tz. If it is taken, try adding a location or what you do, for example yourbusinesstz.com or yourbusiness-arusha.co.tz.

3. Avoid numbers and hyphens where possible

"Is that the number 4 or the word four?" Numbers and hyphens cause confusion when spoken. Use them only if there is no good alternative.

4. Pick the right extension

• .co.tz – best for businesses serving Tanzanian customers (TZS 25,000/year).
• .com – best for international customers (TZS 35,000/year).
• .or.tz – for NGOs and associations; .ac.tz for colleges and universities; .sc.tz for schools.
• .africa – for brands with a pan-African identity.

5. Register more than one

Many businesses register both the .co.tz and the .com and point them to the same website. It costs little and stops competitors or scammers using your name.

6. Check social media too

Before registering, check whether the same name is available on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X. Matching names make you easier to find.

7. Make sure it is not someone else's trademark

Do not register a name that copies another company's brand. It can lead to disputes and you may lose the domain.

8. Register it now

Good names are taken every day. Once you have a name, check availability on our domain search and register it – you can add hosting and email later. See all extensions and prices on our domain registration Tanzania page.
